Online Marketing Blog: Advantages of Social Networks for Business

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Social networking provides personal and professional advantages. The biggest advantage being communication. Social networks allow companies to reach wider audiences without ever leaving their office. Pre-social networks days, a lot more money was being spent on advertisements, travel, and business development to reach audiences outside the local area in which the business resides in.

Promoting a product or service has never been easier than through social networks. Companies can do beta launches or product demos within hours receiving valuable feedback that can be taken into factor before launching the actual product.

Social networks like LinkedIN provide an amazingly easy manner to connect with decision makers at companies across the globe. There is no need to buy lists or contact information anymore, most of that information is readily available and easily accessible.

Social networks are also an excellent way to create self-promotion or brand awareness. The best way to do this is by engaging with others on social networks in a way such that people want to dialog with you and to make people curious enough to ask you more about what you do. Finding an employee, evaluating an employee, finding someone who knows someone, etc. are all easier in the age of social networks than even two years ago.

If businesses can stay focused on their goals and reasons for being on social networks, they can leverage the various benefits without falling prey to the disadvantages that are also presented by social networks.

Online Marketing Blog: Search Engine Optimization + Social Networking!

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

In May 2010, social platforms surpassed the number of visits by Internet users when compared to the search giant Google. Google is the most popular search engine in town, if not the only search engine that really remains "standing". I mean who uses Yahoo for search anymore (anyone???)?

Top visited sites remain Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and then the rest.

But I don't see how Facebook can ever become a "search engine". It just doesn't have the content that Google has. Facebook and other social platforms have "user-generated" content. So from a user reach perspective, they are great tools for businesses. But individuals and companies will continue to use Google as a search engine to find relevant information. Hence the need for search engine optimization and top rankings. But since top rankings can benefit from links from social networks, businesses benefit from incorporating search engine optimization and social networking together.

Google's got competition in Facebook for sure from a simple "user" number perspective which I can see why. Grandmas who'd never go to Google to search for anything would definitely go to Facebook to see pictures of their grandkids. Right?

So is it really surprising then that Facebook will continue to lead the "number of users" statistics? But when it comes to finding anything at all; from cooking tips to products to vacation spots, Google's where I'm going to be and so are you.

Social Media Blog: Ok, we get it, Facebook is finally # 1!!

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Well, here's more research and now it appears that finally Facebook IS the number one site accessed by internet users as of last week. According to an Internet Research company, Hitwise, Google got 7.03% of all web visits while Facebook got 7.07%.

Hmmm……….

Ok so Facebook and Google will probably play this number 1 or number 2 dance until a real winner emerges or a third player enters the competition. Google or Facebook, it matters not to me, I visit both frequently but I do visit Google more than Facebook. Perhaps it's the nature of my business or perhaps it's that I just like Google more for now.

Social Media Blog: Want to Connect with Fortune 100 Companies? Find them on Twitter!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The Global Social Media Check-up is yet another social media usage study released by Burson-Marsteller. The study shows that:

  • Globally, 65% of Fortune 100 companies have active accounts on Twitter
  • 54% have a Facebook fan page
  • 50% have a YouTube channel
  • 33% have a corporate blog.

Overall though, only 20% of Fortune 100 companies, globally, are using all four platforms. Only 20%!!! What are they thinking? If they can do one or two, they can certainly do all four.

But the good news again is that Twitter is the platform of choice for 65% of them. So get yourself on Twitter and make sure you are focusing on balancing quality AND quantity of your Twitter participation. What I mean is be sure to have "Quality" content while you continue to build the "Quantity" or number of followers who will read your tweets.

Social Media Blog: Google AND Facebook Together, finally!

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Finally!! Google and Facebook are together! Isn't it great? Ok, what I mean by "together" really is that Google has started indexing and showing Facebook results in it's own real-time feed. Until now Goolge was only showing Twitter and MySpace results.

However what's this? Facebook will only share about 3 million of its page information that has celebrity, business, and organization information with Google. When it comes to Bing, Facebook's allowing them to view all user updates. Facebook has over 400 million users, making it the largest social networking site.

In a way, it's good that all updates are not being shown on Google. How annoying would it be to scroll through real-time Facebook content to try to find relevant business information you may be looking for?

Social Media Blog: Facebook Vs Google, the battle lines are drawn.

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Well, if you have a Facebook account, you know how much time you spend on Facebook and you also know how much time others are spending, right? Now we have statistics that show that Facebook is the 2nd most popular site from a total number of visitors perspective.

Compete Inc, (a company which publishes research data on these kinds of interesting web & other stuff) published results that showed that Facebook's 134 million unique visitors in January bypassed Yahoo's 132 million unique but was just short of the 147 million unique visitors on Google.

Another statistic reported by Compete was that users spent 11.6% of their web time on Facebook which is more than double the time they spent individually on Yahoo or Google.

I think that Facebook's popularity is largely due to the connectivity it offers which no other site currently offers. Even Google Buzz just doesn't have the same "connectivity" and interactivity which I feel Facebook offers.

Will Facebook bypass Google in traffic sometime soon? Well, given the January 2010 numbers reported by Compete Inc (shown above), I think that that could happen sooner rather than later. It's not just the sheer volume of users interested in networking with family and friends that will make Facebook the number one site. I think it's also because Facebook offers personal and business interactions; what with the fan page and group participation opportunities that no other site offers. LinkedIn and Google's Buzz have a few features that may grow over time but I feel that they have a while to go before they catch up with Facebook.

Social Media Blog: Alterian Study Found Businesses Looking to Invest More in Social Media Marketing in 2010

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Alterian company's 7th annual survey in which 1,068 marketing professionals around the world were surveyed, found that two-thirds are planning a social media marketing investment within the next 12 months.

Over 67% of those surveyed identified Social Media as either "critical to success" or "increasingly important" and about  40% said they would spend about 1/5th of their traditional direct marketing budget for social media activities.

This makes a lot of sense right?

Social media provides direct, instant, global access to hundreds of thousands of people. So it makes me wonder when I hear people tell me that they are still relying on the yellow pages for their leads or when people give me "we're a local company" as their reason for not engaging in social networks.

Come on folks. Lets get real here.. Social media marketing is not just important to the viability and long-term success of your company, it is becoming IMPERATIVE.

Stay in front of your customers and prospects and remain in business or else……(you fill in the blanks).

Social Media Marketing Blog: Gartner 2010 and Beyond

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Gartner's "2010 and Beyond…" predictions for Information technology organizations and users has a whole section on Facebook. Sheesh, and I thought Twitter was the favorite new kid on the block but read along and see why Facebook dominated Gartner's report.

Key Findings

  • Facebook continues to dominate as the most popular social network community, with over 350 million active users as of November 2009. If Facebook continues growing as it has, more than one billion users will be on Facebook by 2011 and about 70% of users are from outside the USA.

    • My two cents on "The Opportunity": Businesses seeking a global audience should focus on Facebook as their primary marketing strategy. Strategies to promote their products and services using culturally relevant messaging to that country's audience will give them a huge advantage of their competition.

  • 65 million people access Facebook using their mobile devices. Mobile careers are working to provide facebook apps that will appeal to these mobile users.

    • My two cents on "The Opportunity": Companies need to create mobile friendly websites. Inclusion of links to company websites won't do any good if mobile users cannot read the information displayed in their mobile devices. So 2010 strategy for businesses should be to create a mobile marketing strategy, first step of which is to make a mobile compatible website.

Some other interesting facts shared by Gartner analysis include:

  • Facebook may face potential competition from Orkut in India and Brazil, V Kontakte in Russia, Mixi in Japan or QQ in China.

Me thinks that since the chance of the Chinese portal QQ becoming available internationally appears slim to none (given China's politics), Facebook should only be concerned with the other three. Now I don't know about you, but I don't know how many companies are actively selling anything in Russia so that leaves Orkut and Mixi as real potential customers. (More musings on these three sites sometime soon in 2010.)

Since Gartner devoted a whole section on just Facebook, I'll jump on that bandwagon and summarize this:

Facebook is important folks. Whether you want to communicate to your stakeholders and prospects or whether you want to launch a new product or create a customer service support strategy, do it through Facebook.

Don't just create a fan page. Your strategy shold include tasks such as joining various groups and forums, offering discounts and coupons, advertising specials & promotions and basically building your fan base using quality messaging that engages and converts fans into customers.

As always, don't just get started with a fan page because you can or want to do it yourself. Think of a long-term strategy and also think of measurement criteria to measure performance. Last but not the least, think about the resources required to make Facebook Marketing successful.

Here's to your Facebook success in 2010….

Facebook says “Think Privacy”

Friday, December 11th, 2009

I logged into Facebook and found a screen asking me to review my old settings and decide whether I wanted to keep them as is or change them. The first time I got that pop-up screen, I chose 'skip for now" but the next time I decided to just take care of it and review all my settings to determine who could see what.

This new Facebook privacy policy made me think, even if for a couple minutes, as to whether or not I had the correct settings. We all post pictures and comments and information on our Facebook pages without thinking about all the new "friends" we've added since we first set up our privacy settings. I know that each time I get a new friend request and add someone, I don't go back and check my settings to see whether the new "friend" should be able to see everything that the old "friends" could. And for most of us since the term "friend" on Facebook includes anyone and everyone including kids, business colleagues, employees, "real friends", etc. I know that it makes sense to be more vigilante about what is being read or viewed by whom.

The new Facebook Privay policy review is mandatory for all 350M plus users of Facebook and I think it is really great that they are forcing their users to review and think about their privacy settings. I mean although it is my responsibility to read the TOS (Terms of Service) of every website, sometimes its just easy to accept the TOS thinking "what could POSSIBLY go wrong"!

So when you encounter the Facebook privacy review screen, take a few minutes to really review your settings instead of just going through the motions. In the long-run you may end up thanking Facebook for making you more aware about the privacy settings on your Facebook page.
